Valerie and her all-woman crew won "first in class" in the 1996 Los Angeles to Ensenada Mexico sailboat race aboard Phoenix. Here she is holding the winning trophy

Valerie is a member of the 1997 Women's Challenge TransPac Team. The Transpacific Yacht Race is sailed every-other year from Long Beach to Honolulu--2,200 miles. The TransPac has been in existence since 1906 and is considered to be one of the most prestigious international yacht races. This 1997 TransPac all-female crew will be led by Linda Newland of Alameda, California skippering her 37-foot ultralight ocean racer. Watch for this experienced amateur racing crew to make a bold mark in July as they bring another victory to women's sailing.
